Throughout 2005, Blair is celebrating its 95th year of business! This remarkable milestone presents a perfect opportunity to extend a heart-felt thank you to our customers - You are the reason we’re able to celebrate this special anniversary. It’s also a time to reflect on our past and look forward to our future.
Let’s go back to 1910. John L. Blair, a law school student, was approached by a classmate with a novel offer: was he interested in becoming the sales manager for a raincoat factory? Intrigued, Mr. Blair took a suitcase of raincoats and approached shop owners en route home for Easter vacation. The owners were reluctant to carry a sizeable inventory and he sold just one, his only black one, directly to an undertaker! So, with the sale of one raincoat, he made the pivotal decision to borrow $500 to print and mail flyers to 10,000 undertakers across the country. Thus, New Process Rubber Company was born.
Fast forward to 2005. Blair Corporation is America’s 8th largest direct-market apparel retailer. From our humble beginnings of offering one product to a few hundred customers, we’ve grown to selling thousands of items to millions of customers.
Blair has weathered many challenges during the last 95 years: the Great Depression, two world wars, and a fire that destroyed our corporate headquarters, to name just a few. But, we’ve achieved even more successes on our journey to becoming the American Stock Exchange’s oldest continually listed company. In 1910, New Process Rubber Company shipped from the basement of a local furniture store; today, we boast a state-of-the-art 850,000 square foot distribution center. During the mid 1990’s, we transitioned from sending mail slips to catalogs. Today, our customers can enjoy the convenience of shopping online through our fully-integrated Web sites: www.blair.com, featuring women’s, men’s and home fashions; and www.irvinepark.com, featuring our newest line of men’s and women’s office attire.
Along the way, many things have changed. But we’re proud our commitments to value and service have never wavered. Exceptional value, exceptional service - throughout our long history, we’ve remained true to these two principles.
Finally, our story would not have been possible without the tremendous talent, dedication and hard work of our associates, both past and present. Today, Blair employs a “family” of over 2,200 associates. While we’re still headquartered in Warren, PA, we now have facilities in the nearby towns of Erie and Franklin, along with offices across the Pacific Rim of Asia. And in each of these locations, family and community values remain a part of the fabric of our associates’ lives.
